Sentimental Journey: Winter Journey Nobuyoshi Araki Shinchōsha/1991/200*265*15/Japanese In 2017, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography held the exhibition “Nobuyoshi Araki: Sentimental Journey 1971–2017” to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the museum's opening. This book, Sentimental Journey: Winter Journey, chronicles the final chapter of his travels—the passing of his wife Yoko—compiled diary-style alongside Araki's own words. The opening features 21 photographs from Sentimental Journey, documenting his honeymoon with Yoko. Then begins the winter journey, starting with the words: “May 17th was Yoko's birthday. No matter how busy we were, we always spent the whole day together. This photo became the last one of us together.” Yoko was hospitalized in August 1989 and passed away on January 27, 1990. After the funeral and other events, the final photo is dated February 1st, showing their beloved cat Chiro running through the snow. The journey to the hospital, the hospital room, a signboard of a girl holding a black cat, the house without Yoko... The everyday scenes captured matter-of-factly as her condition worsened are all the more poignant, and Araki's text is heart-wrenching. “This is a hymn to love, and a requiem for love” (from the box).
