St. George the Victorious - entirely hand-painted icon on wood.
St. George, also called the Victorious, is one of the most revered saints and martyrs in the Christian faith.
The birthplace of St. George the Great Martyr is Cappadocia. According to various sources, the saint's parents were named Gerontius and Polychronia. His father was a pagan Persian warrior, and his mother was a Christian who raised her son in Christian piety.
St. George the Great Martyr lived during the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. When he was still a child, his father fell seriously ill and died. His mother, who had a large estate in Palestine, returned to her homeland after the death of her husband.
The historical path of St. George
Young George joined the army. Soon after, the emperor noticed the good qualities of St. George and made him a member of the state council. At that time, there were great persecutions against Christians. After the death of his mother, Saint George inherited her estate. Being a devotee of Christ, he freed the slaves, distributed his property and wealth. He began to prepare to defend the Christian faith and perform a feat in the name of Jesus Christ.
He appeared at the imperial palace in Nicodemus and boldly declared his will before everyone. In vain he was advised by Diocletian to deny Christ. Because of his unshakable faith, he was thrown into prison and subjected to all kinds of torture. Only strong faith helped Saint George stoically endure all the tortures. The Lord God, Jesus Christ Himself, healed his wounds with a touch of His hand.
Many people, seeing the steadfastness of George and his devotion to Christ, also believed and were baptized. The wife of the emperor Alexandra was one of them. Therefore, Diocletian ordered both of them to be killed with the sword. And so on April 23, 306 in the city of Lit, Palestine, George was beheaded and worthily completed his confession of Christ, for which he received the incorruptible crown of faith.
Saint George is a symbol of courage and unquestioning faith.
Symbolizes the strength of the spirit.
The icon depicts the victory of Saint George over the serpent, a symbol of darkness.
