M.C. Escher (1898-1972) - "VERBUM" (1942)

Author: Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) Title: "VERBUM" (1942) Size: 55 x 65cm Copyright: The M.C. Escher Company - Baarn - The Netherlands. Offset print, made on 180g high-quality matt paper. Displays a vivid and sharp image quality. Just the right size to frame. Impressive effect when framed. Shipping in a rigid tube via certified express mail. It is possible to collect more than one object, from the same auction, in the same shipment. The work is a lithograph, set in a hexagonal format, and features a metamorphosis of forms: from primordial triangular shapes in the center, to birds, fish and frogs around the perimeter. The Latin word “VERBUM” (meaning “The Word”) appears at the centre, referencing the opening of the Gospel according to John: “In principio erat Verbum” (“In the beginning was the Word”). Escher described the work as linking the elements of earth, sky and water, and using the evolution of shapes (day/night, black/white) to convey a sense of creation and transformation.
