Charles Fabvier (1782–1855) was a distinguished officer of the French army. He served under Napoleon and took part in his military campaigns. After being dismissed following the restoration of the monarchy, in 1823 he decided to come to Greece to support the Greek struggle for independence, persuading many battle-hardened Bonapartist veterans to follow him.
After the destruction of the Philhellene Battalion under Charles Norman, Fabvier undertook the formation and training of a regular corps, which distinguished itself in numerous battles. He learned to speak Greek fluently and was extremely popular with his soldiers. He was perhaps the most sincere and selfless philhellene of all.
In a daring operation, on November 30, 1826, he broke through the siege of the Acropolis to resupply its defenders and remained there until its surrender in 1827. In recognition of his services, the Third National Assembly of Troezen granted him Greek citizenship that same year, and later King Otto honored him with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer.
