Soma yaki chawan 相馬焼 茶碗(そうまやき ちゃわん)|Hori Masa 堀政(ほりまさ) This Soma ware tea bowl showcases the characteristic fine crackles on the surface, known as kan-nyu, which occur due to differences in shrinkage rates between the glaze and the clay body. Combined with the blue-green glaze distinctive to Soma ware, these crackles form a pattern referred to as “Aohibi.” This piece was fired with a celadon glaze, then coated with a different glaze (green glaze) and fired again to complete the work. Depending on the viewing angle, the surface reveals entirely different visual expressions. --- Artist Profile Soma ware has a history of more than 300 years since the opening of its kiln.
