Zeerpaint - "Gossip"

"Gossip" is a 100 x 100 cm painting that merges artificial intelligence and traditional painterly practice. While the composition was initially generated using the AI tool Midjourney, the entire work itself was executed entirely by hand using acrylic, tempera, and spray paint. The digital image thus serves as a conceptual starting point, but the final piece is firmly rooted in physical, manual craftsmanship. The AI was prompted to imagine an alternative art history: three women from the Baroque era gathered together, eating cake and engaging in intimate conversation. The work deliberately repositions women—particularly older women—at the center of representation. In contrast to their historical marginalization and the rarity with which aging female bodies have been portrayed with dignity and presence, Gossip proposes visibility, agency, and communal power. By using AI as a speculative tool, the painting questions authorship and canon formation. If artificial intelligence is trained on existing art historical data, it inevitably reproduces its biases. Here, however, it is instructed to alter the narrative—to rewrite a visual tradition that has long privileged male perspectives and youthful femininity. The three women appear self-possessed and socially connected, subtly challenging hierarchical and patriarchal structures embedded in art history. After the initial coloration, the painting was covered with a layer of red tempera. A further translucent neon-red glaze was applied on top. As a result, the once polychrome image has become monochrome. This radical chromatic intervention functions conceptually: the red filter symbolizes the “tinted lens” through which we perceive and construct reality—whether shaped by ideology, technology, or historical convention. Note: The painting will be shipped rolled in a tube without wooden frame. Further Information: I am living and working in Cologne, Germany. I share my painting process on Instagram and studied Painting at Alanus University. (Master of fine arts, degree in 2017).
