Elegant early 20th century desk inkwell crafted from solid green calcite onyx with original cast brass mount and hinged lid.
This piece clearly reflects the transitional design language between late Edwardian refinement and emerging Art Deco geometry — visible directly in its contrasting exterior and interior detailing.
The exterior brass lid presents a restrained geometric floral medallion and squared architectural form, already leaning toward early Art Deco aesthetics. In contrast, the interior retains softer Edwardian influence, featuring a putti (cherub) head relief beneath the lid — a classical decorative element characteristic of earlier luxury desk accessories.
This combination of geometric exterior and figurative interior decoration is typical of transitional European objects produced circa 1915–1930, when traditional ornament was gradually giving way to modernist structure.
Often referred to as a “lady’s inkwell”, the compact proportions and refined ornamentation suggest use on a personal writing desk or vanity rather than a large executive office setting.
Material
• Solid green calcite onyx base
• Cast brass mount and hinged lid
Dimensions
Width: approx 8 cm
Length: approx 11 cm
Height: approx 3 cm
Weight: approx 0.40 kg
Condition
Very good antique condition.
• Stone intact — no cracks or structural damage
• Natural calcite veining and crystallization visible (characteristic of the material)
• Original brass with authentic aged patina
• Interior shows natural oxidation staining consistent with historic ink contact and age
• Putti head relief preserved in original state (not over-cleaned)
• Hinge functioning properly
• Glass ink liner missing (common for age)
The visible interior staining and patina have been intentionally preserved, as they form part of the object’s historical surface and authenticity rather than being later damage.
Please view all photos carefully, as they form part of the object description
Design Notes
The onyx base displays subtle translucency with tonal variation from soft apple green to honeyed yellow depending on light. The exterior brass geometry contrasts beautifully with the interior figurative putti motif — offering a rare glimpse into the stylistic shift from Edwardian ornament to early Art Deco form.
A refined collector’s desk object with strong decorative presence despite its compact size.
Shipping & Packaging
This object will be carefully packed to professional standards.
The inkwell will be wrapped in multiple protective layers (acid-free tissue, bubble wrap, and cushioning material), then placed in a rigid inner box and secured within a second outer shipping carton to ensure safe transit.
Due to the natural stone construction, special care will be taken to immobilize the object and protect all edges and corners.
Tracked and insured shipping will be provided.
The buyer will receive a tracking number once dispatched.
Dispatch within 1–3 business days after payment confirmation.
