Figur - Madonna and Child - 24 cm - Keramikk

A polychrome ceramic Madonna and Child executed in the modern devotional style associated with the Belgian workshops of Amphora and Perignem. The figure reflects the mid-twentieth-century movement toward simplified, modern interpretations of sacred subjects, where traditional iconography was translated into a more restrained sculptural language. The Virgin is depicted in a slender, elongated form, her drapery falling in simplified planes that give the piece a gentle vertical rhythm. The Child is held centrally within her arms, creating a compact and balanced composition. Both figures are crowned by stylised halos, subtly integrated into the modelling of the head and shoulders. The surface is finished in a soft polychrome palette, with a blue-toned robe contrasted by warm terracotta flesh tones and lighter accents to the Child’s garment. The glaze shows attractive tonal variation and a slightly fluid character that gathers naturally in the contours, lending the surface depth and visual movement. The facial expressions are quietly contemplative, with a softness that reinforces the devotional intent of the work. While somewhat more modest in execution than the most sculptural examples from the Amphora school, the piece remains a charming and characteristic example of Belgian mid-century religious ceramics. Condition is very good. No chips, cracks, or restorations are observed, and the glaze remains well preserved. Unmarked, but clearly consistent with the Amphora / Perignem tradition.
