Dochu is a traditional craft from Hiroshima Prefecture in which copper plates are hammered to shape, a "hammered" pattern is applied to the surface, and then smoked and polished with rice straw.
The technique is said to have been established in the first half of the 17th century. The name "dochu" comes from when, at the beginning of the Edo period, the lord of the Hiroshima domain nicknamed one of his craftsmen "copper insect" (copper insect) for his dedication to his work. Dochu is primarily used to make vases, decorative plates, tea ceremony utensils, and stationery, and the colors and luster they acquire deepen over time.
