Antique Turkmen Yomut (or Yomud) Chuval (also known as tschowal or juval). These sack-like rugs were traditionally used by nomadic tribes for storage in their tents. Key features of the piece: Origin: Western Turkmenistan, made by the Yomut tribe. Pattern: Nine large geometric shapes (called “gul”) are displayed on a reddish-brown ground color, surrounded by a traditional Yomut border. Age: Most similar pieces date from the late 19th century. Design: The rug has a wide, unpatterned band (element) at the bottom, which is characteristic of the Chuval.
