Gambia - Banner - Flag - Large Gambia flag
Until independence in 1965, Gambia belonged to the United Kingdom.
In the early 20th century, England actually took little action in their colony, and after the Second World War, the country soon took steps to initiate Gambia's independence. In 1965, Gambia first became an independent member of the British Commonwealth; in 1970, a referendum led to the formation of the Gambian Republic with Jawara as its first president. In 1982, a confederation with Senegal was briefly formed, but this came to an end in 1989. Meanwhile, Jawara and his party won all elections between 1970 and 1992. However, in 1994, a non-violent coup took place, in which Lieutenant Jammeh seized power. He remains the political leader of Gambia to this day.
