Par av Shan-buddhaer - Bronse - Myanmar - Shan

Pair of Narrative Shan Bronze Figures Myanmar (Burma), Shan States, 18th–19th century A rare and evocative pair of Shan bronze narrative figures, depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha, including the iconic Descent from Tavatimsa Heaven. The taller figure (18.5 cm) represents the Buddha standing frontally upon a complex tiered base, symbolizing his miraculous descent from the celestial realm after preaching to his mother. The figure is characterized by a slender, elongated form, a high conical ushnisha, and simplified, serene facial features typical of Shan devotional casting. The long, columnar robe falls in restrained vertical folds, emphasizing the vertical ascent and descent symbolism of the scene. The second figure (16 cm) depicts the Buddha seated in meditation atop a similarly elaborate architectural base, possibly representing a shrine or celestial platform. Together, the two figures form a compelling narrative grouping, illustrating both transcendence and contemplative presence. Both are cast on intricate openwork bases composed of tiered and lattice-like elements, evocative of stylized temple structures or cosmic stairways. These bases add a strong architectural dimension to the composition. The surfaces bear heavy encrustation and mineral accretions, with areas of green and earthen patina consistent with prolonged burial or ritual deposition. This weathering has created a richly textured surface that enhances their archaeological and aesthetic appeal. Heights: 18.5 cm and 16 cm Condition: Substantial surface encrustation and corrosion; losses and fragility to the openwork bases; otherwise stable and intact. An unusual and highly decorative pair of Shan narrative bronzes, distinguished by their rare iconography, sculptural presence, and evocative aged surfaces.
