Globus av Columbus / Paul Oestergaard - ca. 1935

An attractive antique terrestrial globe dating to around 1935, produced by the renowned German publisher Columbus Verlag Paul Oestergaard K.G., Berlin-Lichterfelde, one of the leading European globe manufacturers of the early 20th century. Identified as “Model 200”, this piece represents an excellent balance between educational purpose, cartographic accuracy, and the high manufacturing standards typical of German interwar production. The globe features a political and physical map enriched with economic-geographical annotations, a particularly valuable aspect as it reflects the global perspective and economic dynamics of the 1930s, just prior to the major geopolitical transformations brought about by World War II. The scale of 1:40,000,000 allows for clear readability of continents, maritime routes, and major trade connections. Visually, the globe is highly appealing: the surface displays a refined original patina with warm, slightly aged tones that enhance its authenticity and depth. The graduated meridian, likely made of aluminum, adds both elegance and functionality, while the turned wooden base incorporates an inset compass—an especially desirable detail that emphasizes both the scientific and decorative character of the piece. The “Model 200” belongs to Columbus’ mid- to upper-range production, intended for an educated and professional audience, and is today appreciated by collectors for its print quality, cartographic clarity, and durable construction. It is an object that combines historical, aesthetic, and educational value, suitable both for specialized collections and as a distinctive decorative piece. A well-preserved and complete example, visually harmonious and strongly evocative of its era.
