Takehara Shunchōsai (1772–1801) - Samurai in combat, 1796

Takehara Shunchōsai (1772–1801). "Settsu meisho zue." Samurai in combat. Woodblock, ca. 1786. Mounted on cardboard. Sheet: 22 x 32 cm. Mount: 30 x 42 cm. An extraordinary work by the Japanese xylograph. Shunchōsai was a prominent artist of the Osaka school during the Edo period, known primarily for his detailed illustrations in landscape books and geographical guides called meisho zue. Although he did not specialize exclusively in warriors (musha-e), his works offer a unique insight into samurai life in everyday and satirical contexts. The samurai, the military elite of feudal Japan (11th–19th centuries), were governed by Bushido, a strict code of honor that prioritized loyalty and courage. Experts in single combat and mounted combat, they evolved from mounted archers to masters of the katana... __________________________________ Professional packaging with all security measures.
