Hår-ornament (3) - Japan - Japansk antikk-lakk

Japanese Antique Lacquer Kushi & Kogai Set — Maki-e & Raden Floral Garden, Signed, Meiji Period A beautifully crafted Japanese lacquer hair ornament set comprising a kushi (comb) and kogai (hairpin), housed in the original fitted box. The set dates to the Meiji period (1868–1912) and displays exceptional craftsmanship in both maki-e (gold lacquer painting) and raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) techniques. The kushi is semi-circular in form with a rich black lacquer ground, decorated with an elaborate garden scene featuring wisteria, lilies, peonies and other seasonal flowers against architectural elements including railings and screens. The design incorporates gold maki-e, silver maki-e, and iridescent raden inlay, creating a striking interplay of colour and texture. The kogai is of traditional two-piece construction, lacquered in black with gold maki-e floral and foliage motifs, with raden-inlaid flowers on both ends. One end features a gold lacquer ground with polychrome raden decoration. The kogai bears a gold maki-e signature reading 光威 (Kōi) or 光武 (Kōbu), suggesting the work of a named lacquer artist. Both pieces are presented in the original fabric-covered fitted box with cream ribbed textile interior. Condition: Good antique condition consistent with age. Two comb teeth have thread repairs; minor tip losses to some teeth. Box shows age toning and light soiling. No cracks or chips to the lacquer body. Dimensions: Kushi (comb): approx. 10 cm wide x 6 cm high. Kogai (hairpin): approx. 16.5 cm long.
