The Hague School Modernist Pedestal Table, 1920s–1930s
Oak with black-stained details
A Dutch modernist pedestal table in oak, made in the spirit of The Hague School / Haagse Stijl, circa 1920s–1930s. The piece has the clean architectural clarity that makes this movement so appealing: rational, vertical, restrained.
The design is built around a tall square frame, with four straight oak uprights supporting a compact square top. The proportions are elegant and slender, making it ideal as a pedestal for sculpture, ceramics, a lamp or a plant. At the bottom, a lower square shelf creates both visual balance and practical use, while the open construction keeps the piece light.
The black-stained feet and the dark band beneath the top add a sharp architectural accen. This contrast between warm oak and black-stained wood is very much in keeping with Dutch modernist furniture of the period, where simple forms were given depth through rhythm, proportion and material contrast.
The table has a beautiful warm oak colour with lively visible grain. Perfect as a plant stand, also perfectly suited for displaying something sculptural as shown in some of the photographs.
A very useful and decorative pedestal table, combining easily with both Art Deco and contemporary interiors. Elegant, sober and quietly intelligent, the kind of table holds the room together from the corner.
Condition:
Good lightly restored condition with small signs of age and use. Very stable and sturdy. The oak has a warm surface and attractive grain.
