The institution of the European Capital of Culture, established in 1985 following a proposal by Melina Mercouri, aims to highlight Europe’s rich cultural heritage and to foster closer ties between its peoples. For 2023, Eleusis was selected—one of the most sacred sites of antiquity, deeply connected with the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, as well as the Eleusinian Mysteries held in their honor. Modern Eleusis, a vibrant and dynamic city just 20 km from Athens, is striving to reverse the severe environmental degradation caused by industrialization, improve the quality of life for its approximately 30,000 residents, and make full use of its vast cultural heritage. The events and initiatives organized under “2023 ELEVSIS European Capital of Culture” place people, society, labor, culture, and the environment at their core, aiming to reveal the unseen side of Eleusis and to connect its past with the present and a promising future.
