Philips - B1X67U/03 Rør-radio

In the autumn of 1961, in a narrow brick row house somewhere in the low, rain-polished streets of The Hague, a new radio arrived wrapped in brown paper and tied with rough string. It was a Philips B1X67U/03 — cream-colored dial glowing amber behind curved glass, its bakelite cabinet smelling faintly of warm dust and machine oil even before it was switched on. To the family who bought it, it was not merely electronics. It was a window. Every evening, after supper plates were stacked in the sink, Hendrik would cross the room and turn the large ivory knob. First came silence, then the soft electrical hum of warming tubes. A few seconds later the speaker bloomed alive with static, whistles, and finally music drifting through Europe’s invisible corridors. The radio spoke many languages. French chanson from Paris. Shipping forecasts from the North Sea. German news read in clipped precision. English jazz programs fading in and out beneath atmospheric crackle. Sometimes, late at night, stations from much farther away emerged like ghosts through the noise, bending around the curve of the earth. A tube radio does not simply play audio; it performs its existence. It glows. It breathes heat. It waits for its tubes to wake. It turns invisible waves into something tangible and alive. The Philips B1X67U/03 was a machine from an era when technology still felt faintly magical — when voices arriving from hundreds of kilometers away could make a child believe in kingdoms hidden inside a wooden box. As more modern radios started to become main stream, the Philips B1X67U/03 was sent to the attic. More than 60 years later, the radio was found and it appeared in exceptional state. And fortunately, it was well treated and started up very carefully with a variac. This specific version has its bakelite in perfect condition Even has the original screws to fit the back panel, amazing but true. Unfortunately, some glue remains (as it seems) are on top of the curved glass of the dial The reception is, as expected with the medium wave, accompanied by crackle from atmospherics and electrical equipment in the direct surroundings. I can find 3-4 broadcasts om MW and 1 on LW Note that the photos have been made in the evening in a moderately lit room. The dial is lit well but does not light up your room.
