Viking Iron Axe Head
c. 9th–11th century A.D.
An authentic Viking forged iron axe head dating to approximately the 9th–11th century AD. This c well-balanced example features a broad crescent cutting edge, a pronounced downward beard, and a tapered oval eye for hafting onto a wooden handle. The elegant profile and practical proportions are characteristic of Scandinavian and Northern European utility and combat axes from the Viking period.
The axe was hand-forged from iron and retains a strong, unmistakable Viking form. Its slightly bearded lower edge would have provided improved control and versatility in both woodworking and martial use. The narrow body and reinforced poll demonstrate the efficient forging techniques employed by Norse blacksmiths during the early medieval era.
The surface displays an attractive dark excavated patina with visible forging texture, stable age corrosion, and signs of long burial. The cutting edge remains clearly defined, and the socket is intact and well preserved. The piece presents exceptionally well for display and collection purposes.
Excavated condition with stable oxidation and age wear; structurally solid with intact socket and blade profile
A genuine Viking Age axe head with strong visual appeal and classic Norse form — an excellent artifact for collectors of Viking weapons, early medieval arms, and ancient forged ironwork.
Height 17.5 cm.
