Oldtidens Egypt, gresk-romersk periode Terrakotta Statue - 10 cm

Ancient Egypt — Terracotta Female Head Depicting a Basket Bearer — Hellenistic Period — Fayum — 2nd Century BC — 10 cm with stand Authenticated and certified as ancient. Former collection of the renowned Egyptologist Roger Khawam. Certificate of Authenticity issued by Roger Khawam himself. This remarkable terracotta female head originates from the Fayum region and belongs to the artistic tradition of Hellenistic Egypt during the 2nd century BC. The figure depicts a young woman wearing an elaborate basket or architectural headdress, characteristic of popular and votive representations combining Greek influences with local Egyptian traditions. The delicately modeled face displays idealized features typical of Hellenistic aesthetics: large almond-shaped eyes, a finely shaped slightly parted mouth, and stylized radiating locks of hair framing the forehead. The headdress, richly decorated with geometric motifs and ornamental registers, reflects the refinement of the coroplastic workshops active in the Fayum during this period. Executed in pale pink-beige terracotta, the piece retains an attractive archaeological patina along with traces of ancient slip and pigments. Surface irregularities, mineral deposits, and minor wear further enhance its authenticity and historical character. During the Hellenistic era, the Fayum was one of the major cultural centers of Ptolemaic Egypt. A crossroads between Greek and Egyptian traditions, the region produced numerous votive and decorative figurines intended for domestic shrines, popular religious practices, and funerary contexts. Female representations of this kind were often associated with protection, fertility, abundance, and sacred symbolism. This work perfectly illustrates the unique artistic fusion characteristic of Greco-Roman Egypt, where Hellenistic aesthetic ideals merged with the ancestral beliefs of the Nile Valley. Through the serenity of its expression and the monumentality of its headdress, it stands as a precious testimony to the popular art of ancient Egypt. Provenance: Prestigious Morand & Morand auction sale, 2025. Former Roger Khawam Collection, 1995. Former French private collection assembled during the 1960s. Dimensions: 10 x 7.5 cm with stand. Presentation stand included. Copy of the Certificate of Authenticity available upon request.
