The edition was published by Danielem, Abrahamum & Adrianum à Gaasbeeck in Leiden in 1665, and was printed by the widow of Jean Elzevier, in 1665. It represents the finest and most comprehensive bilingual edition of Hippocrates produced before the modern era. Engraved title and engraved portrait of Hippocrates to the front of volume one. Full brown leather binding with simple gilt decoration and titles to the spine. Both volumes have a little rubbing to the spine, and with loss to the top surface leather on the spine (worse to volume 1 - see photographs). A few historiated initials and small vignettes throughout each volume. Dedication to the front of volume one. All edges gilt. Internally clean and tidy with a little darkening only. To the front of each volume is the paper ex libris of Syston Park, the celebrated library of Sir John Thorold. This library was largely dispersed by Sothebys in 1884 (although this copy does not appear to have been in that sale). The is also the small leather label of Huth Library "Ex Musaeo Huthii". This library was begun by Henry Huth (1815-1878) and continued by his son Alfred H. Huth. The Library was dispersed by Sotheby's in a number of sales between 1911 and 1920. Hippocrates of Kos (c. 460–370 BC), also known as Hippocrates II, was a Greek physician and philosopher of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. Fascinatingly, this work was also sought after at the time of printing. Thomas Jefferson himself specifically requested a copy of "Hippocratis opera omnia, Gr. Lat. Van der Linden, 2 vols., 8vo, Lugdun. Batav. 1665" while in Amsterdam in March 1788, and the bookseller Van Damme eventually located one for him! 20 x 12.5 cm
