On the floor, one of them rests where he fell, the mask still on his face, his bare torso catching the light from the windows. He lost this bout and plays at defeat with the ease of someone who does not take losing seriously. Standing over him, his companion holds the foil pointed at the surrendered body, more in jest than in glory, his own mask already set aside. To the right, with his back turned and completely nude, the third man writes the result on the slate board. He was the first to lose that morning, and so he is already as he is. But there is a hidden smile in the way he traces the numbers, because he knows something the other two still pretend to ignore: by the end of that morning, whoever wins, they will all end up exactly like him.
