ITEM DESCRIPTION: This is an auction of a very special piece of the history of Apple: a new in box unit of the fourth generation of the original iPod (later called iPod Classic), from 2004, still sealed in its genuine box. This unit of iPod is even more special because it is an American unit distributed by Hewlett-Packard (HP). In August 2004, Apple and HP collaborated selling original 4th Gen iPods under the brand of HP, called “iPod+HP”, with their logo engraved in the rear surface of the iPods. The condition was that the new HP personal computers with the operative system Windows XP had to bring the software iTunes factory preinstalled, so it was a good idea for introducing the Apple software to the big group of users that preferred Windows instead of macOS. The only Apple products that were produced under this collaboration were the 4th Gen iPod (the model of this auction), the 1st Gen iPod mini and the 1st Gen iPod Shuffle. This collaboration ended in January 2006, so these products only were sold for 16 months, only in the United States. Only the 5% of the 4th Gen iPods sold were from HP. Nowadays they are extremely rare and very hard to find, specially if we are talking about a new in box unit like this one, with the iPod HP still sealed in its genuine package, including all sealed accessories and documentation. The 4th Gen iPod introduced the innovative Click Wheel controller. It was a touch-sensitive scroll wheel for quickly selecting your favorite song, but with 5 integrated buttons for controlling the iPod. This iPod also featured a very high battery life of 12 hours, too high for 2004 standards, and hard disk drive for storing up to 10,000 songs. In the launch event of the 4th Gen iPod, the 19th July 2004, Steve Jobs said: “The best digital music player just got better. The fourth generation iPod features Apple’s amazing Click Wheel for superb one handed control, 12 hour battery life and the new Shuffle Songs command in the main menu—all in an even smaller design that puts up to 10,000 songs in your pocket.” Moreover, Carly Fiorina, chairman and chief executive officer of HP, said “HP has chosen iPod and iTunes as the best products to integrate in to our digital entertainment strategy. We decided to wait for this amazing new fourth generation iPod, as it will offer our customers an even better experience.
