This magnificent, large-format original copperplate engraving depicts the siege and storming of the Danish fortress of Fredriksödde (now Fredericia) by Swedish troops in 1657.
Drawn by the famous Swedish military engineer and architect Erik Dahlbergh (1625–1703). The print was engraved for Samuel von Pufendorf’s monumental historical work *De rebus a Carolo Gustavo* (published in Nuremberg in 1696), which documents the exploits of the Swedish King Charles X Gustav. It depicts the massive Swedish assault on the fortifications during the Danish-Swedish War (1657–1658). In the foreground on the left, a wooden gallows-like structure or hoisting device catches the eye, whilst in the background the Lillebælt (Little Belt) is depicted with warships.
Printed from two copper plates and joined together.
