En treskulptur - Mende - Liberia

This female figure from the Mende cultural sphere, collected in the Jendema region, belongs to the tradition of figurative sculptures that, within Mende societies, can be understood as expressions of fertility, social status, and spiritual integrity. The cultural interconnections along the border between Liberia and Sierra Leone led to a lively exchange of artistic forms, allowing characteristic features of Mende aesthetics to spread to neighboring regions. The standing figure is crowned by a triple-fanned headdress that rises above a finely textured, knobby hairstyle. A central brow ridge emphasizes the vertical axis of the face and lends the figure a dignified severity. The forward-facing eyes and the small, circular mouth create an expression of focused alertness. Particularly characteristic is the broad, quadruple-jointed neck, a common symbol in Mende art of beauty, prosperity, and physical perfection. A bast necklace, held together at the back by a shell, signifies prestige and ritual significance. The monumental, flat-modeled breasts dominate the torso and allude to motherhood, fertility, and the life-giving role of women within the community. The hands, clasped between the breasts, draw the eye to this iconographic center. Feather-like ornaments around the navel and the textile loincloth complete the figure's symbolic attributes. A glossy patina, fine cracks, and signs of wear testify to age and long use, lending the work an impressive historical presence. Literature (Selection) Radiance from the Waters: Ideals of Feminine Beauty in Mende Art, New Haven 1986. Mende Art and Female Leadership, New Haven 1986. African Art in Cultural Perspective, New York 2008. Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa, Washington D.C. 1989. Africa Explores: 20th Century African Art, New York 1991. L'Art Africain, Paris 1988. MAZ14087
