Guptaperioden Stein Hodet til en bodhisattva - 28 cm

This fine sandstone head of a Bodhisattva represents the high point of Gupta-period sculptural achievement in Northern India, datable to circa 550–700 AD. The face is distinguished by its serene, meditative expression, with a bow-shaped mouth; full lips beneath an aquiline nose; arched eyebrows rendered in relief; and heavy-lidded eyes, all hallmarks of the classical Gupta aesthetic that profoundly influenced Buddhist art across Asia. The figure is adorned with ear jewels, and the elaborately arranged high turban, decorated with a festoon and strings of pearls, reflects the iconographic sophistication characteristic of courtly Buddhist imagery of this period. Height: 28 cm (Height with hardwood custom stand is 39 cm) weight under 10 kg with packing. Condition: In very good condition, without any repairs or restorations, with minor aging chips and soil patina. (See images for more details.) Provenance: This item was acquired from a private collector (Mr. Peter) in 2003 in The Hague, Netherlands, and had been a part of a private Dutch collection of its former owner since 1982. Currently a private property of the seller. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller. No further tests, such as a TL test, lapidary tests, analysis of pigments, or radiography scans, have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
