Each earring with a bright orange carnelian fly (c. 600 B.C.), finely carved with realistic features, drilled for suspension at the top by the head, set in Roman gold earrings (c. 1st Century A.D.).
The wearer of fly amulets might hope to have emulated its renowned fecundity as an honorific award for military valour.
Size: 3.4 cm total L each - 1 5/16 inch
Material: Carnelian and modern gold, total weight= 2.5 grms
Culture: Romano-Egyptian, c. 600 B.C. and c. 1st Century A.D.
Condition: Intact
Provenance: English private collection prior to 2000.
