Né à Londres en 1886, Philip Gregory Needell belongs to this generation of British artists whose sensibility nourished by both the Romantic tradition and the great upheavals of the early 20th century. Trained in drawing at Regent Street Polytechnic while working for the Westminster Bank, he develops very early a defined taste for precise observation and the luminous construction of landscapes.
Mobilized in the Royal Navy during World War I, Needell created several maritime scenes of great intensity, today kept at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. After the conflict, he devoted himself fully to painting and traveled regularly to France between 1925 and 1963, finding in the hexagonal landscapes – coasts, villages, changing lights – a lasting source of inspiration.
His oeuvre, initially influenced by Cotman and Turner, evolves towards a more pared-down writing, sometimes close to abstraction, while preserving a strong atmospheric mastery. Needell also takes an interest in Japanese prints and himself creates color woodcuts, demonstrating a rare and refined artistic curiosity.
Sought-after artist on the Anglo-Saxon market, Needell has been shown repeatedly at public sales, mainly for his landscape paintings and watercolors, highly valued for their poetry and their sense of visual silence. His views of France, Great Britain or distant ports seduce with their balance, chromatic softness and ability to capture the moment.
A work by Philip Gregory Needell brings to any collection a touch of serenity and elegance, carried by the gaze of a traveling painter whose sensibility remains timeless.
