Viking era, silver alloy Mjöllnir amulet pendant with integral suspension loop and attached ring. The front is decorated with punched circle-dot designs, plain reverse. This amulet is a variant of the well-known Scandinavian Thor hammer. -> The ring-and-dot motif was widely used in Viking-age and early medieval metalwork. It appears on pendants, brooches, strap fittings, tools, and other personal objects. The design was easy to apply with a punch, but it also created a strong decorative rhythm and may have carried symbolic or protective meaning. Height: ± 37 mm (excluding attached suspension ring). Width: ± 16,9 mm Condition: good solid condition, complete with original suspension ring. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher. -> Thor's hammer, also know as Mjøllnir is often found in Viking burial sites. The pendant represents Thor's hammer, which he uses to create thunder and to smite the frost giants. Wearers of the Thor's hammer pendant hope to invoke the favour of the thunder and fertility god Thor. -> Viking silver jewellery was not only decorative, but also a visible sign of status, wealth, and identity. Small pendants could be worn individually or as part of a larger group of ornaments. -> Ring-and-dot decoration was especially popular in early medieval Europe. Its repeated circular pattern could be purely decorative, but on amulets and pendants it may also have had protective or symbolic associations. -> Silver was highly valued in Viking society and circulated both as jewellery and as a form of portable wealth. Even small silver objects could have personal, economic, and symbolic importance. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics. Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material. Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
