Medieval Islamic Bronze Zoomorphic Apliqué with Feline Head – Seljuk Tradition – 11th to 13th Century AD
A substantial cast-bronze zoomorphic apliqué attributed to the medieval Islamic world, most plausibly within the Seljuk artistic tradition. The circular hoop develops into a sculptural feline or leonine head with prominent pointed ears, almond-shaped eyes and an elongated muzzle, shown leaning toward a large faceted terminal or bezel. The polyhedral element is divided into angular panels, some retaining worn incised motifs. Its powerful modelling, animal-headed construction and geometric terminal reflect the strong zoomorphic vocabulary employed in Seljuk metalwork, where lions and other predatory animals carried associations with strength, protection and authority. The surface preserves extensive wear, mineral deposits and a variegated brown and green patina.
