An attractive Art Nouveau carved wooden expanding book slide, dating to circa 1900, the hinged arched end supports finely carved in relief with stylised iris flowers and long sweeping foliage. The sliding base is further embellished with carved flowing foliate ornament, complementing the floral decoration of the end panels. The book slide incorporates its original expanding mechanism, allowing it to be adjusted according to the number of books displayed and folded down when not in use. The warm-toned wood has developed an attractive aged surface and patina, enhancing the depth and definition of the carving. Dimensions: approx. 31 × 15 × 15 cm when closed Maximum extended length: approx. 53 cm A particularly decorative and practical example of late 19th/early 20th-century Art Nouveau desk and library furniture, combining functional design with finely executed botanical ornament.
