Tidlig middelalder Sølv Relikvieskors - 50 mm

"Early Medieval Silver Reliquary Cross Culture / Period: Early Medieval Date / Period: 8th–10th century A.D. Material: Silver Dimensions: 50 mm Condition: Good condition No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 733 The current owner purchased this object from a reputable Dutch numismatic auction house in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This silver cross is fashioned in the form of a small reliquary pendant, intended to be worn as a visible expression of Christian faith. The front is decorated with a stylised representation of Christ, while suspension loops at the top and bottom indicate that it was designed to be worn or attached as part of a devotional object. The recessed reverse suggests that the cross originally functioned as a small reliquary or pendant intended to contain a tiny sacred relic or other devotional material. Reliquary crosses became increasingly common during the Early Medieval period as Christianity spread throughout Europe. They were worn by clergy, pilgrims, and lay believers alike, serving both as personal devotional objects and as symbols of spiritual protection. Relics associated with saints or sacred places were believed to provide comfort, blessing, and divine intercession for their owners. Such objects were produced by skilled silversmiths using established casting and finishing techniques. Although modest in size, they reflect the craftsmanship of specialised workshops that created liturgical and personal devotional objects for an expanding Christian population. Similar crosses are known from ecclesiastical sites, settlements, and burial contexts across medieval Europe. Dating to the 8th–10th century A.D., this reliquary cross belongs to a period when Christianity became firmly established across much of Europe and personal devotional objects played an important role in everyday religious life. It forms a tangible connection to the medieval world, where pendants of this kind accompanied their owners as enduring expressions of faith and protection."
