Kumi Sugai (1919-1996) - Composition S-Curve & Sun – E.A. XI/XX

Title Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) – Composition “S-Curve & Sun” – E.A. XI/XX – Original Print Description This is an original abstract print with distinctive embossed details by the internationally acclaimed Japanese-born, Paris-based artist Kumi Sugai (1919–1996). Sugai was a central figure of the post-war École de Paris and became internationally renowned for his distinctive fusion of Japanese aesthetics with modern geometric abstraction. After moving to Paris in 1952, he developed a powerful visual language characterized by bold contours, dynamic curves, geometric forms, and striking chromatic contrasts. This captivating composition presents a dynamic visual dialogue between a dark purple arc with radiating bars, a rhythmic grey hatched S-curve, and a prominent raised red line running vertically through the center. The red element features a particularly distinctive embossed relief, creating a subtle three-dimensional effect that can also be clearly observed from the reverse of the sheet. The work is hand-signed “SUGAI” in pencil at the lower right and inscribed “E.A. XI/XX” at the lower left, indicating Artist’s Proof No. 11 from a series of 20 artist’s proofs. Visual Appeal: A dynamic geometric composition combining rich texture, vivid color contrasts, and subtle three-dimensional relief. The interplay between the bold curves, geometric elements, and embossed surface demonstrates Sugai’s distinctive approach to modernist abstraction. Collectibility: A highly appealing work by a globally recognized master of post-war abstract printmaking, whose works are represented in major museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Dimensions: Sheet size: approx. 29 × 24.0 cm Condition Unframed; sold as a loose sheet. Overall in good vintage condition. A minor light foxing spot is visible in the left margin, consistent with the work’s age. The original colors remain vivid and well-preserved, and the embossed paper texture is exceptionally well maintained. We will use Japan Post for shipping. Please allow extra time for delivery as the items are shipped from Japan. Please note that the listed prices do not include customs duties and taxes.
