Luristan Bronse Bjelleanheng med dyreprotomer - 4.5 cm
Small bronze pendant or bell pendant from the Luristan cultural region of western Iran. The object has a hollow, conical to bell-shaped body, rising into a short neck surmounted by a substantial, fully pierced suspension loop.
Particularly distinctive is the sculptural decoration around the body. Several projecting, highly stylised animal protomes or horn- and beak-like extensions emerge from the sides. One of these projections, with its downward-curving profile, is reminiscent of a bird's head. Additional small knobs and pointed elements are arranged around the upper section of the bell-shaped body. This strongly abstracted zoomorphic ornamentation is characteristic of the visual vocabulary associated with Luristan bronze work.
A small circular opening is located below the neck. The conical body is completely open at the bottom, revealing its hollow interior. The object may originally have served as a pendant, small bell, or element of horse harness equipment. Stylised animal forms and protomes frequently occur on Luristan bronze fittings, pendants, and objects associated with equestrian equipment.
The bronze has a dark brown-green surface with pronounced areas of green oxidation and patination. Variations in colour, corrosion and mineral deposits give the object a distinctive archaeological appearance.
Age-related wear, corrosion, mineral deposits and irregular patination. The suspension loop and principal sculptural elements are preserved. Please refer to the photographs for the exact condition.
Provenance:
Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the owners' extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. The collection has been documented in Germany since 1970 and remained in continuous family ownership thereafter. As was customary for private purchases made in local markets during the 1950s–1970s, purchase receipts or invoices were generally neither issued nor requested. The provenance is documented through continuous family ownership, historical photographs, and supporting biographical records.
