Labelled Amatus - 4/4 - - Fiolinbue - 1980

An attractive full-size (4/4) violin from a German workshop, carrying the interior brand "Nicolaus Amatus fecit in Cremona 1657" together with the stamp "Made in Germany". The instrument is offered fully assembled with bridge, tailpiece and fittings and comes in a shaped wooden case. It is a characterful, warm-toned violin that will appeal to students, advancing players and collectors of historical trade violins alike. The "Nicolaus Amatus fecit in Cremona 1657" mark is a model designation rather than a maker’s attribution. From the late 19th century onward, German workshops — notably in Saxony and the Markneukirchen region — produced large numbers of quality trade violins built after the celebrated Amati pattern of Cremona, and the "Made in Germany" stamp confirms this workshop origin. Instruments of this lineage are valued for their even, singing tone and honest period craftsmanship, and remain sought after by players and collectors. The violin is built with a fine-grained spruce top and a two-piece flamed maple back with matching ribs, finished in a warm red-brown varnish that brings out the flame of the wood. The scroll is cleanly carved and the purfling runs crisply around the edges. Ebony-style fittings, a carved bridge and a chinrest complete the setup. The medium arching and classic proportions of the Amati model give the instrument a warm, focused and responsive voice, suited to both solo and ensemble playing. What Is Included • The full-size (4/4) violin as photographed; • Fitted bridge, tailpiece, chinrest and pegs; • A shaped wooden carrying case. A fresh set of strings and a professional setup are recommended before playing. The instrument is in good overall condition for its age, structurally sound and presentable. Normal signs of age and light play wear are present in the varnish, with some minor wear along the edges of the lower back consistent with an instrument of this vintage. No significant structural cracks were observed at the time of inspection. A quick check-over and fresh setup by a luthier are advised to bring it to optimal playing condition. An excellent choice for advancing students looking for a warm-toned full-size violin, for ensemble and orchestral players wanting a characterful second instrument, and for collectors of German Amati-model trade violins. Its honest workmanship, flamed maple back and historical brand make it as attractive on display as it is in the hand.
