Kiseru smoking became an established part of Japanese culture during the Edo period (1603–1868) and continued through the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods. The tabako-bon served as a portable smoking station, keeping the necessary smoking implements together. Sets of this kind were used in homes, inns and other traditional Japanese settings. Together, these six objects provide an appealing representation of Japan's historical smoking culture rather than presenting a single isolated smoking implement. Inscription The wooden tobacco container bears engraved Japanese characters which appear to read 「温海」 (Atsumi). Atsumi is also the name of a historic area in present-day Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, known for its long-established hot-spring culture. However, the precise meaning, origin and significance of the inscription on this particular object have not been authenticated, and no attribution is claimed. Condition The objects are in used vintage/antique condition, showing age-related wear, scratches, marks, discoloration, patina and deterioration consistent with their age and traditional use. The tobacco containers and pipe cases show particularly visible signs of age and use. Please carefully examine the detailed photographs, which form an important part of the condition description. The set has not been practically tested with tobacco. Important Note on Dating These objects represent types of smoking utensils with a long history in Japan. The individual pieces have not been scientifically or professionally dated, and they are not being represented as definitively dating from the Edo period.
