Charles Rochussen (1814–1894), Attributed - The Execution of Calvinists in France

Charles Rochussen (1814–1894 Attrib.) – "The Execution of Calvinists in France" – Watercolor, signed and dated 1847 This powerful and atmospheric watercolor by the Dutch artist Charles Rochussen (1814–1894) depicts a dramatic historical scene: the execution of Calvinists by the french. The composition shows a group of figures gathered around an execution site, with mounted soldiers and somber onlookers under a dark, storm laden sky. The subject reflects Rochussen’s fascination with historical and military themes, rendered here with remarkable intensity and detail. Medium: Watercolor on paper Signed and dated lower left: ChR, 1847, Nametag also on the bottom of the frame. The watercolor has not been taken out of the frame. Title inscription: Executie van Calvinisten door fransen etc. Dimensions: ca. 41x57 cm Frame: Presented in a 19th-century frame with gilt inner border Condition: In good condition considering age, with some light toning and small traces of foxing. The colors remain vivid, and the sheet is well-preserved behind glass. Frame with signs of wear consistent with age. The frame has some wear Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands. Charles Rochussen, a prominent 19th-century painter, watercolorist, and illustrator, is particularly admired for his historical subjects and battle scenes. His works are represented in the collections of several Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam). This watercolor is possibly an unknown or undocumented work, adding to its rarity and scholarly interest. The dramatic theme, combined with Rochussen’s refined technique, makes it a highly desirable piece for collectors of Dutch Romantic art and historic watercolors. It will be packed very good for transport. Please note that the frame is only for protection. The auction consists only the artwork. Any damage to the frame during transport is at risk of the buyer. I will pack it very safe for transport with taping the glas.
