Oil painting depicting the head and shoulders of an elderly bearded man, executed in the manner of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). The composition and lighting are comparable to Rembrandt’s “A Rabbi” (c. 1635, formerly in the collection of the Earl of Derby). The work shows detailed modelling in warm brown tones, with a focus on light and shadow characteristic of the Rembrandt school. The technique and palette are consistent with painters active in or around Rembrandt’s workshop in the mid-17th century. The painting appears to have been originally made on canvas and was later, most likely during the 19th century, mounted onto a wooden panel for preservation. The surface shows typical age-related craquelure and some minor paint losses. Under UV light, several letters and name-like inscriptions become visible beneath the paint surface. These markings could be relevant for attribution, but a full technical and art-historical investigation would be required to verify them. Such research can take considerable time, which is currently not available to the seller.
