Stola (sjal)
A beautiful Art Nouveau style paisley shawl, made in the 20th century in the Netherlands or Belgium. Paisley shawls were a fashionable item of women's clothing in Europe during the late eighteenth and nineteenth, and 20th centuries. Many were made of intricately woven and delicate wool. This particular piece was woven with the complex jacquard technique, creating a beautiful depth of colour and pattern. Though this pattern was influenced by traditional Indian Kashmir shawl motives, it resonated well with the European Art Nouveau aesthetic and was very popular in the period. Antique paisley shawls are becoming very popular and sought after again.
80 X 80 cm
Overall in very good condition with light wear and staining consistent with age. A beautifully decorative piece that can be used as a tablecloth, as a fashion accessory, or a collector's piece.
