Byobu screen Prunus - Papir, Silke, Tre, Messing - Japan - 1900-tallet

A striking late 20th-century Japanese Showa-period four-panel byobu screen, depicting blossoming spring prunus (plum) trees with songbirds in graceful flight. The composition is set against a luminous metallic silver-gilt background that beautifully reflects the light. Painted with rich, vivid pigments, the artwork captures the vibrancy of spring in exquisite detail. The scene is mounted within an ebonized black lacquered wood frame and bordered by an elegant light-yellow silk brocade. The birds are rendered with a stylized, almost iridescent quality that contrasts beautifully with the vivid green foliage. Executed in the Nihonga school tradition, the screen is signed by the artist Shunrai, with a seal reading “Shun.” The delicate depiction of the prunus trees employs the Rimpa school’s Tarashikomi technique, lending depth and softness to the composition. An exceptional piece in remarkable condition for its age and use.
