Shishimai is believed to drive away evil spirits, protect against misfortune, and invoke blessings for a good harvest. This particular piece represents a male lion, identified by the prominent single horn at the top of its head, which is detachable along with the two side ears. Such details make it both symbolic and functional, designed to be worn or manipulated during performances. The expression is bold and powerful, featuring wide nostrils, squared teeth, stylised swirling eyebrows, and an intimidating open mouth. The jaw is constructed separately and can be moved, connected internally by a visible rod that was likely used to control its movement during the dance. The surface has a rich, aged patina. Traces of original red lacquer and gold leaf can still be seen in areas, particularly around the teeth, edges and joints, suggesting that it was once vibrantly decorated. Today, time and use have given it an atmospheric and dignified weathered appearance. Small cracks, soiling, minor losses and abrasions are present throughout, with some sections of the lacquer chipped away, as shown in the photos. Kindly refer to the photographs for detailed condition. Dimensions: approx.
