"I am not an artist. I am an image maker."
- Thomas Hoepker -

BRILLIANT PHOTOBOOK.

New, mint, unread.
Still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher's plastic foil (only opened once for signature).

THIS IS THE LAST EXCLUSIVE PHOTOBOOK AUCTION by 5Uhr30.com in 2025 -
with more than 100 great lots from my personal collection and from recent acquisitions.

"Thomas Höpker was twenty-seven when the magazine Kristall sent him to America in 1963. "Take a look around," was the terse assignment. It took him from coast to coast through almost half of all the states. Three months later he returned with thousands of black-and-white photographs: mainly of people in their everyday lives. Photographed in the big cities, but also in the hinterland. The reportage - spread over four issues of the magazine - instantly catapulted him to the forefront of photojournalism. It was not a glowing picture he had painted, but behind scepticism and reservation, so much curiosity shone through that no one was surprised when Thomas Höpker decided to move to America for good several years later. After a stellar career, first with the magazine Stern, later with the Magnum agency, of which he was president for a long time, he retired in New York. But then in 2020, Höpker, now eighty-four years old, decided to take the tour from back then once again.
The volume Road Trips, USA now interweaves the two undertakings and intersperses hundreds of his long historical photographs with colour photographs from today. In this way, the book takes the viewer on a journey through the entire continent as well as through time."
