He was a very important and talented artist, a professor at the Academy of Mechelen, and won many prizes during his career. In 1924, he immigrated to the United States, where he became a professor at Columbia University. This is an exceptionally beautiful work by him, an unusual, modernist composition with sober lines. Despite the simple lines, Mary and Jesus radiate warmth, the child Jesus clutching a white dove, and Mary silently contemplating him. The brilliant technique and superb composition demonstrate what a great artist Jacques was.
