Votivgave - Olje på metallplate - 1853 - Ex Voto - Sykdom

This poignant mid-19th century Mexican Ex-Voto painting on tin illustrates a heartfelt act of faith and thanksgiving. At the center, Christ is depicted crucified, portrayed with visible wounds, a bowed head, and traditional INRI inscription, capturing the suffering and redemptive significance of the Crucifixion. Below him, a female donor is shown kneeling in fervent prayer, her hands joined in supplication and her gaze lifted toward the Savior. Executed in the folk devotional style typical of rural Mexican religious art, this Ex-Voto (from ex voto suscepto, “from the vow made”) was painted in 1853 as an offering of gratitude. These works were commonly created by or for individuals who survived illnesses, accidents, or other perils, and dedicated to saints or divine figures who granted them relief. The inscription explains that the donor was saved from a fever illness by the holy intervention of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Such dedications were not only acts of private devotion but also formed part of a public testimony to divine mercy. This piece exemplifies the profound personal spirituality of 19th-century Mexican Catholic culture. Measurements: Approximately 35 cm x 26 cm Condition: Fair to good condition for its age. Minor corrosion spots and flaking typical of 19th-century tin devotional art. The painting remains vibrant, and the handwritten inscription is largely legible. Some edge wear and minor bending of the tin surface are visible. Provenance: Private Spanish collection
