19th Century Indian Lacquered Wooden Covered Box – Late Mughal / Early Colonial Period (circa 1800–1850)

Turned and hand-crafted wooden covered box from Northern India, decorated using traditional lacquer (lac) technique.

The surface features a deep red ground with black engraved vegetal and foliate motifs, applied by hand and characteristic of regional folk craftsmanship from Rajasthan and Gujarat workshops. The form is produced on a lathe, with a fitted lid and knop finial.

Such containers were commonly used for storing spices, betel, sweets, or small household items in domestic interiors.
