This monumental glass sphere by R. Pierini embodies the legendary verre de Biot tradition at its most expressive. Mouth-blown in the workshops of Biot on the Côte d’Azur, the piece captures an entire underwater universe within its generous, perfectly rounded form.
At its heart, turbulent ribbons of deep teal, forest green, and warm amber swirl in arrested motion, evoking kelp forests stirred by a hidden current. Suspended throughout the glass are countless tiny air bubbles — the hallmark signature of authentic Biot glasswork — scattering light like a constellation of pearls. A bold central void, a large enclosed bubble, draws the eye inward, creating a mesmerising lens-within-a-lens effect.
Three prominent spherical inclusions anchor the composition, their chrome-like clarity contrasting dramatically against the organic, fluid interior forms. Viewed from each angle, the sphere reveals an entirely new landscape, shifting between oceanic depth and volcanic abstraction.

A captivating one-of-a-kind blown glass orb created personally by Robert Pierini, one of France’s most celebrated glassmakers, who established his acclaimed workshop at Biot in 1980 inside a historic oil mill . This spherical sculpture — designation GA6, certified oeuvre en verre — showcases deep crimson and midnight black swirling forms suspended within crystal-clear glass. Gold aventurine flecks catch the light throughout the interior, while deliberately trapped air bubbles of varying sizes — a hallmark of the Biot tradition — add mesmerizing depth and movement. Translucent white filigree ribbon threads dance through the composition, and bold rounded bubble inclusions punctuate the design. The flat polished base reveals the richly colored interior from below. Pierini studied the golden ratio and worked with glass’s inherent ability to reflect, absorb, and transmit light , qualities beautifully evident in this piece.
