Tytuł: Passage d'une Ame [Un torse lumineux, qu'on aperçoit de dos et légèrement tourné vers la droite, emerge de l'ombre. The two fermés poings are applied against the tempes. L'âme, even personnifiée, semble quitter la terre in a supreme ascension].

Etching from 1891, originally as a frontispiece for Adrien Remacle's book, "La passante, roman d'une âme", published in 1892 by Bibliothèque Artistique & Littéraire Editeur (Paris, 1892).

This is one of the few larger proofs on cream Hollande laid paper (the book itself is only 17 x 11 cm). As André Mellerio (art critic, biographer, and friend of the artist) describes in the famous catalogue raisonné of Redón's graphic work, there are a few proofs, part of the frontispiece, on large paper, without specifying how many, within the general print run of 400 copies on Hollande paper (most of them cut for the book's frontispiece and less valued than the larger loose sheets).

Minimal handling marks. Very well preserved.

Framed in wood with a double acid-free mat. 38 x 31 cm.

There is a posthumous edition from 1922 of only 30 copies, printed in the Parisian workshop of Louis Fort, which Melleiro also catalogues (Mellerio 21bis), and whose original plate is the same one held by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

And very few of the total are signed directly by Redón, such as the one held by the British Museum or the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

Among Redón's ever-desired prints, this is undoubtedly one of the most enigmatic by the Symbolist painter and precursor of Surrealism: A luminous torso, seen from behind and slightly turned to the right, emerges from the shadows. (...) The soul, thus personified, seems to leave the earth in a supreme ascent.
