Biography:

Lauri Laine, born in 1946 in Helsinki, is a Finnish painter based in Rome. Laine's art can be perceived as an encounter of abstraction, cubism and the Early Renaissance, through the traditional oil on canvas the artist links the ages of reflection on the form, space, light and perspective. Laine received his art education at the The School of the Fine Arts Academy of Finland (1975-9) and started to exhibit shortly after his graduation, both individually as well as collectively. The beginnings of his career were marked by invitations to shows such as "The 33rd Exhibition of Young Artists" (1980) and "The 87th Annual Exhibition of Finnish Artists" (1982), both at the Kunsthalle Helsinki, or "Art Today" at the Sapporo Triennale (1981). During the decade of 80s, Laine taught at the Institute of Arts in Lahti, Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki and The University of Art and Design in Helsinki, where he lectured until 1998. Already critically acclaimed in Scandinavia, Laine came to the wider international recognition by participation at the São Paulo Biennial (1989). More recently, the major retrospective, "Paintings of Light and Space" (2012-3), was displayed in Helsinki, Joensuu, Vaasa and Tuusula.
