Opis od sprzedawcy
Antique Victorian Family Bible – Brown’s Self-Interpreting Bible (Glasgow, 19th Century)
For sale is a magnificent and historically significant antique family bible from the Victorian era: "Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible", authored by the renowned Scottish theologian Rev. John Brown and published by James Semple, 19 South Cumberland Street, Glasgow.
This monumental, heavy volume combines profound theological history with exquisite 19th-century bookbinding craftsmanship and is a true centerpiece for any collection of antiquarian books.
Key Features & Details:
Binding & Exterior: Bound in heavy, dark original leather featuring stunning, deep blind-stamped ornamentation (floral motifs, cross patterns, and intricate borders) on both the front and back covers. The classic 5-ribbed spine showcases brilliant gilt lettering ("BROWN’S BIBLE") framed by ornate gold tooling.
Content & Layout: Comprising well over 1,000 pages of heavy, high-quality historical paper. The text is set in a traditional two-column layout, accompanied by extensive marginal references, exegetical commentary, and evangelical reflections compiled by Rev. John Brown.
Illustrations & Extras: The book includes a fine portrait frontispiece of the author ("Rev. John Brown"), an in-depth biography titled "The Life of the Rev. John Brown", and several breathtaking, full-page color chromolithograph plates depicting iconic biblical scenes (including "Moses Viewing the Promised Land", "Joash Shooting Arrows at the Command of Elisha", and "Man Goeth Forth to His Work and to His Labour Until the Evening").
Condition: Beautiful, age-appropriate antique condition with authentic patina. The leather binding shows minor, natural shelf wear along the edges and corners consistent with its age. There are some age spots / foxing present on the pages (typical for a book of this age), but the Bible appears to be complete. The heavy text block remains stable, the binding holds securely, and the text is clear and readable throughout.
A breathtaking display piece and a rare treasure for collectors, historians, and lovers of antique literature!
