Original Contemporary Work – "The Calling of Saint Matthew" Reimagined
Up for auction is this striking original painting, straight from my studio!
First things first: I am clearly a much better painter than I am a photographer. I gave it my absolute all, tried every angle, and fought with the lighting—so please forgive any glare! Trust me, the texture and complexity are even more powerful in person than my questionable photography skills let on.
About the Artwork:
This powerful composition is a contemporary reinterpretation of Caravaggio's Baroque masterpiece, "The Calling of Saint Matthew" (A Vocação de São Mateus). It transforms that iconic historical narrative into a modern, psychological drama, presented with a highly expressionistic and graphic sensibility.
The painting features two distinct groups in a starkly contrast-lit, subterranean interior. On the left, a cluster of five distorted figures sits around a table, their faces and limbs rendered with powerful, fragmented geometry, deeply immersed in their worldly affairs. On the right, two figures emerge from the shadows. The larger, dominant figure, a clear interpretation of Christ, extends a command and a powerful, almost tangible, ray of dramatic golden-yellow light that cuts across the scene. The central act—the pointed, commanding finger of calling—is explicitly rendered in the gesture of the right-side figures towards the table. Above, a small, dark wooden-framed window, a contemporary equivalent to Caravaggio's own window, lets in this defining 'sacred' light. It is a brilliant blend of old and new, conceptual and visual, creating a truly unique and compelling collector's piece.
